Text of news flash

With the advent of summer, unusually hot weather and frequent election rallies, Indian demand for desserts has soared, making the country's sugar consumption expected to reach an all-time high this year. According to a report on April 23, sales of ice cream and other cold drinks rise as India enters summer every March. However, the superimposed effect of this year's hot weather and election rallies has further stimulated the consumption of cold drinks. In the context of continued high temperatures, the highest temperature in many parts of India has recently exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. The meteorological department predicts that from April to June this year, India will face more hot weather than in previous years. In this environment, people need cold drinks to cool down and quench their thirst. Indian sugar producers and operators expect sugar consumption to reach 7.5 million tonnes between April and June this year, up 5 per cent from a year earlier. In the sales year that ended on September 30th, 2023, Indian sugar consumption data showed 27.85 million tons. Based on this growth trend, India's total consumption this year is expected to reach a record 29 million tons.
